Applied Scientific Technologies (AST) are an emerging company founded by Garry Lofthouse and Lee Raywood in 2017 Stokesley, North Yorkshire. AST are innovative specialists in robotics, automation and hardware integration in the life and physical sciences for laboratory and medical applications.

AST is focused specifically on the laboratory and digitalisation markets to help support customer’s automation journeys. Our team have decades of knowledge in the field of automation and control experience.

Specialising in Laboratory 4.0, Digital Twins, Collaborative and Autonomous Robots, System Integration, Internet of Things (IoT), SILA and Artificial Intelligence. AST use all the emerging technologies of the digital world available and apply them to the unique challenges faced by laboratory businesses to improve transparency and productivity.

AST have developed two revolutionary new products, namely Deft and Hyve™ as part of a digital roadmap and the Lab-of-the-Future landscape.

Deft, the Digital Enabled Formulation Toolset (Deft) provides the information gap when comparing manually made laboratory bench formulations and offers a new way for scientists to accurately create formulation instructions with ease.  Deft was developed in concert with industrial research and formulation scientists, but its versatility means Deft is able to cover many other laboratory types and processes, including microbiology labs and drug discovery applications. Deft works at the bench alongside the Scientist and has been developed using a mobile phone or tablet App which acts as an on-board guide while digitally recording all information and resulting data. Deft allows the scientist to scan barcodes, take pictures, make notes and record videos to add to the formulation instructions, allowing the scientist to spend more time conducting experiments. Without Deft, formulation steps are only as accurate as the scientist’s memory and note taking, leaving the way for experiment failures, illegible writing and transcription errors. Deft eliminates these risks and improves the quality of data, reproducibility and ultimately, lab efficiency.

The product is built on the growing SiLA2 (Standardisation in Lab Automation) Rapid Integration protocol. Data captured by Deft, can be used for audit/verification of formulations, modelling and process scale up.

Hyve 1.png

HyveTM, a Collaborative Autonomous Robot, is designed to discover advancements in formulation chemistry and biotechnology.

HyveTM is a unique design concept in the turnkey, laboratory automation marketplace. A user-friendly robot that can be configured for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, healthcare, biotech and food and drinks market. It can be adapted and redeployed easily so as your requirements change, HyveTM can change too!  This is due to its modular construction, consisting of a base system with plug in modules/segments, each segment can be configured or re-configured for different lab equipment and processes, which means it is particularly suited for those in an R&D environment where change in research demand is high.

The use of Laboratory 4.0 and Internet of Thing (IoT) technologies future proofs both systems. HyveTM and Deft are compatible with Over-the-Air updates, system diagnostics and performance dashboards. The use and automation of processes to capture data in this way can be integrated as part of any Lab-of-the-Future program.
